One of the Three Great Festivals of Tohoku, “Akita Kanto Festival”
Akita Kanto Festival has been registered as an Important Intangible Folk Cultural Property and is regarded as one of the three great festivals of the Tohoku region. The festival is held to clear away vengeful spirits and midsummer illnesses, as well as to wish for things such as plentiful harvests. Performers parade around showing off their balancing of long, 12-meter bamboo poles holding 46 paper lanterns, called “kanto,” on their hands, foreheads, shoulders, waists, and so on.
You must see the illusory beauty created by over 280 kanto moving along with the sounds of flutes and taiko drums!
Stalls will be set up in the parking lot of Akita’s City Hall during the festival period, so you can enjoy delicious foods there if you get hungry!
