Enjoy Beautiful Autumn Leaves! Tateyama Kurobe Alpine Route

The “Tateyama Kurobe Alpine Route” is a mountain sightseeing route that runs through the Northern Alps, filled with 3,000-meter-high-peaks. The route is connected by a variety of transport methods, including cable cars, ropeways and trolley buses, all the way from Tateyama Station on the side of Toyama Prefecture to Ogizawa Station on the side of Nagano Prefecture. There is so much beautiful scenery to take in as you travel through the area, and in autumn you can enjoy brightly colored autumn leaves as the trees change colors. Immerse yourself in Japan’s unique beautiful scenery.
Later in this article we will also introduce a convenient and great-value travel pass!

1) Shomyo Falls

Crashing down in a spray of mist, Shomyo Falls is Japan’s tallest waterfall at 350m. The sight of the white misting waterfall in a valley stained red and yellow with autumn leaves is unbelievably beautiful. You can appreciate the view of the falls while being sprinkled with the waterfall’s spray at the Takimidai viewpoint.

2) Midagahara

These vast highlands rest atop a smooth volcanic plateau at an altitude of 1600~2000m. There are many sights to walk between, including wetland boardwalks, caldera observation decks, and more. Midagahara is also known as a great spot for photos of a sea of clouds, so in autumn you can enjoy the beautiful view of clouds spread out among the colorful leaves.

Murodo is both the highest point of and the central point of the alpine route. It is well known as a base for sightseeing and mountain climbing. It features several sights, including Mikurigaike and Enmadai. The highlight of the area is its extensive view of the 3,000-meter-tall mountain peaks stained beautiful reds, yellows, and greens. Murodo is also inhabited by many ptarmigans (grouse-family game birds), which are classified as Special Natural Monuments of Japan.

4) Daikanbo

The expansive panoramic view of Lake Kurobeko and the Ushiro-Tateyama Mountain Range visible from this rooftop observation deck is one of the most beautiful points on the Alpine Route. The view from the ropeway connecting Daikanbo Station and Kurobedaira Station is also a must-see! This area is particularly great for sightseeing, as you can enjoy three different types of scenery together here; snow on the mountain peaks, autumn leaves in the middle, and greenery at the foot of the mountains.
