Enjoy Everything Izu Has to Offer During the Special Limited-Time Shizuoka Destination Campaign!

Shizuoka Prefectuer is located at the foot of Mt. Fuji, Japan’s tallest mountain. Currently the prefecture is hosting the “Shizuoka Destination Campaign,” which focuses on attracting tourists to the prefecture for three months, from April through June of 2019. During this period, there are many services and fun events available to make tourists’ visits as enjoyable as possible! This article will introduce Izu, an area on the east side of Shizuoka that is home to beautiful nature and amazing hot springs.

<Eastern Izu Area>

Mt. Omuro

Mt. Omuro, or Omuroyama, is a beautiful mountain with a unique shape like that of a bowl with chopsticks resting on its side. The mountain was formed during an eruption about 4,000 years ago. There is a lift that goes up to the summit at about 1,000 meters, where you’ll find a promenade where you can enjoy a beautiful 360° panoramic view. Visitors can also enjoy taking part in archery down in the 70-meter-deep crater.

Komuroyama Park Azalea Festival

Komuroyama is a nature park located at 321 meters above sea level. This vast garden is home to around 100,000 azaleas across 40 varieties that bloom in beautiful layers of red. During the azalea festival, the park also features events and local food stalls!
There is also a sightseeing lift that takes you up the mountain, and from there you can look out over Mt. Fuji and Sagami Bay.

At night, the azaleas are illuminated beautifully in direct light, creating a different vision of beauty than what you can see in the day.
The night lift service is only available on certain days! We also recommend taking in the beautiful starry sky up at the summit.

<South Izu Area>

Shimoda Park Hydrangea Festival

Shimoda Park is an area that overlooks Shimoda City and Shimoda Port. The large plot is packed with around 150,000 hydrangea plants that bloom into around 3 million beautiful blossoms. It’s particularly moving and beautiful in the morning, when the morning dew glistens on the flowers. The hydrangea festival also brings a variety of stalls to the park, and events are held every Sunday.
Furthermore, kinmedai, or splendid alfonsino, is a local delicacy and at its peak of flavor in June, so be sure to enjoy some alongside the flowers!
